Adolescent Program

Preparing Young Adolescents for High School—and for Life Beyond the Classroom

7th-8th Grade

A Critical Stage of Growth

Ages 12–14 are a profound developmental period. Students are forming identity, strengthening critical thinking, and seeking greater independence and social connection.

In many middle school environments, this is where joy and engagement begin to fade—overwhelmed by pressure, rigid structures, and work that feels disconnected from real life.

At Salem Montessori School, our Adolescent Program is designed to do the opposite:

to honor individuality, deepen purpose, and help young adolescents grow into capable, confident young adults.

What Makes Our Classroom Different

A real-world learning environment built for independence, relevance, and meaningful work.

A Community That Mirrors Real Life

Students work in a mixed-age setting (7th–8th grade), where collaboration, mentorship, and shared responsibility help prepare them for high school.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Interdisciplinary, project-based studies connect academic concepts with the broader Roanoke Valley. Students engage with local experts, participate in fieldwork, and pursue place-based learning.

Intellectual Challenge With Purpose

Academics—literature, writing, humanities, science, and the arts—are explored through integrated unit studies that encourage critical thinking and deeper understanding.

Entrepreneurship & Real-World Skills

Students operate a small business, guided by our school’s financial advisor. They learn marketing, budgeting, customer relations, record-keeping, and how to manage a bank statement—practical skills that build confidence and independence.

"Genuine enthusiasm for learning!"

"They [children] are insistent on showing me their work before they leave because of the genuine enthusiasm for learning that has been fostered from day one."

An Integrated, Purposeful Curriculum

Our Adolescent Program is rooted in Montessori’s vision for “Erdkinder”—learning that connects adolescents to their community, their work, and their personal purpose.

Students explore:

Humanities & Literature: Writing workshops, literary analysis, research, history, and social sciences.

Mathematics & Science: Advanced studies with opportunities for high school credit in Algebra I, Geometry, Spanish I, and Robotics.

Entrepreneurship & Economics: Business planning, operations, financial literacy, and real market experience.

Arts, Expression & Design: Visual arts, creative writing, drama, music, and other outlets for identity and expression.

Fieldwork & Community Engagement: Place-based learning, community partnerships, and hands-on experiences throughout the Roanoke Valley.

The Transformation

  • Confident young adults who understand their strengths, passions, and values.

  • Motivated learners who know how to investigate, collaborate, and think critically.

  • Skilled problem-solvers who connect academic learning to real-world applications.

  • Self-aware adolescents prepared for the academic and social transition into high school—and equipped for lifelong success.
