For more than 30 years, Salem Montessori School has grown from a small, one-room schoolhouse into a thriving community on a beautiful 7-acre campus in Salem, Virginia. With forest trails, open spaces, and classrooms designed for exploration, our school gives children the freedom to learn, create, and extend their education far beyond the walls of the classroom.
Today, we serve children from birth through adolescence across five programs—Infant, Toddler, Primary, Elementary, and Middle School. In every stage, our goal is the same: to nurture curious, confident, and compassionate learners who carry their love of learning into the wider world.

The Montessori Movement
Montessori education began in 1907, when Dr. Maria Montessori opened the first Casa dei Bambini (Children’s House) in Rome. Her groundbreaking philosophy emphasized independence, respect, and the belief that children learn best when given the freedom to explore within a carefully prepared environment.
The results were extraordinary. Word spread quickly, and in the decades that followed, Montessori schools opened across Europe, the Americas, and eventually on every continent but Antarctica. Today, the Montessori approach continues to inspire children worldwide—and we are proud to be part of that legacy here in Salem.
